Application season is in full swing, and IELTS test seats are entering the tightest window of the year. Four things to check before you book if you need scores before a deadline.

1. Computer-based tests run almost daily — but book 2-3 months ahead

Since September 2026, IELTS in mainland China is fully computer-based (Academic, General Training and UKVI). Tests run nearly every day, but October-December is peak season and seats in Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou and Shenzhen go fast. Book 2-3 months ahead and keep one or two backup test centres.

2. Know the fees and change rules

In mainland China the test fee (including UKVI) is CNY 1,990, and transfers or cancellations cost CNY 380. Your seat is only locked after payment — selecting a seat without paying does not complete registration.

3. Book your speaking slot separately

After registering, book your speaking interview no later than 2 days before the registration deadline. Miss the window and the system assigns a time automatically — possibly an inconvenient one.

4. Results in 3-5 days — plan around your deadline

Computer-based results typically arrive 3-5 days after the test. If your application deadline is tight, pick an earlier test date and leave buffer for a possible EOR (re-mark).

Pre-booking checklist

  • Work backwards from your application deadline
  • Lock seats 2-3 months ahead, with backups
  • Complete the speaking booking on time
  • Practice 2-3 full mock tests in a computer-based interface first

On test day, screen-based time management matters as much as English. Try a few full mock tests on our platform first — free quota is available for new accounts, and AI writing feedback points out exactly where you lose marks.
